The collection holds correspondence of Hanna Spitzer. Included are documents pertaining to her forced emigration from Vienna in 1938 as well as vital records and a photograph. There also is Edith Neumanns list of Spitzer pictures as of 1935
Hanna (Hansi) Spitzer was born on September 11, 1897 in Vienna, Austria. She was the daughter of the lawyer and art collector Alfred Spitzer and his wife Hermine. Hannas younger sister was Edith Neumann, née Spitzer, a microbiologist who was married to the Congregationalist pastor Frederick Neumann. Hanna was forced to emigrate from Vienna in 1938, where she had been employed as a tutor. She eventually settled in New York, where she died in December 1982
Alfred Spitzer invested in the work of artists such as Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and others; he died in the spring of 1923
